Rehab & Mindset

“Mindset is what separates the best from the rest”. Couldn’t be truer, in particular to situations where you are facing a challenge.

It’s easy to make excuses when life throws you a curve ball, constraints pop up and bang there goes the plan out the window. Sure, sometimes things occur that can compromise your situation. But it’s the individuals who take the glass half full approach and look to embrace the challenges FOR WHAT THEY CAN BE rather than use them as a crutch.

Rehab is no different, coming back from an injury or surgery you need to embrace the situation for what it is and give it 100%. At present I’m currently coming back from bilateral vascular surgery on both legs. I’m 3 weeks post-surgery, and three weeks to go before I can start lifting weights again. All I can do is swimming and pool work for the rehab.

I haven’t done laps in a pool in 15+years, but atm that’s my only option. So instead of just waiting it out until I can lift again, I’ve opted to do 1 hour of swimming and pool work every day and watching my diet so I don’t blow out. This approach will see me back in the gym in far better shape and ready to go once I get the all clear as opposed to sitting on my ass for 6 weeks. I’ve also met some new people being in a totally different environment and managed to learn a few handy things from a rehab perspective which will serve me well in my physiotherapy career. Funny, one door closes…. another opens.

This is so true as long as you look for the opportunities and grab them with both hands. I’ll be back lifting soon enough and taking it to another level this year, and I know I’ll be better for it based on the work I’m putting in now. There is no substitute for diligence, consistency, a positive attitude and hard work!
